Roman Yashchenko's Recollections of the First Strike

According to Главком: Roman Yashchenko, deputy commander of the Lasar's Group strike drone unit known by the call sign 'Fish,' has shared memories of his first successful strike on a Russian tank at the start of the full-scale invasion. The results were staggering: the tank was obliterated, with debris scattered across a radius of roughly 100 meters. Only the tracks and a damaged rear section remained of the armored vehicle. However, Yashchenko lost his only drone during the mission. This early success highlighted the asymmetric power of drones, a weapon that has since become central to Ukraine's defense strategy.

'You never forget something like that. It was a spectacular detonation! The blast wave was so powerful it simply blew our aircraft away.' Roman Yashchenko

He also emphasizes how the war has changed the calculus of destroying enemy hardware: 'Fifty tons of iron that was pounding our positions can be destroyed by a single one-kilogram bomb. In 2022, that seemed like science fiction.' While the joy of the successful strike was short-lived due to the lost drone, Yashchenko notes: 'I did think at the time: maybe I should have flown higher to save the drone? But the tank was worth it.'

Appointment of Pavlo Yelizarov

In a related development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has approved the appointment of Pavlo Yelizarov as the new deputy commander of the Air Force. Yelizarov, who previously served as commander of the Lasar's Group special unit, is now tasked with transforming the small air defense system, mobile fire groups, and interceptor drones. This personnel decision aims to enhance the effectiveness of Ukrainian forces in countering the aggressor.

This account underscores the critical role of modern technology in contemporary warfare, where drones have become key assets for achieving military objectives. Successful operations like Yashchenko's demonstrate how destroying enemy equipment can significantly impact the battlefield. The appointment of Pavlo Yelizarov further signals Ukraine's strategic focus on refining its defensive capabilities, which is crucial for ongoing resistance efforts.

The significance of drone warfare in Ukraine is further illustrated by the achievements of Lasar's Group, which has successfully targeted over 40,000 objectives. This impressive record showcases the evolution of drone capabilities and their crucial role in modern combat, reinforcing the strategic shift that Yashchenko describes in his recollections of the early days of the invasion.
