The Heroism of Oleksandr Maslak

According to Главком: Staff Sergeant Oleksandr Maslak, born on February 4, 1982, in Torez, Donetsk Oblast, was killed in action on March 17, 2022, while defending the city of Mariupol. He had been stationed in Mariupol since the first day of Russia's full-scale invasion, serving as a 3rd category border service inspector and the crew member of an anti-tank unit within the fire support team of the Sartan border detachment. His actions in combat against Russian occupying forces were marked by exceptional bravery. The defense of Mariupol became one of the most pivotal and brutal battles in the early phase of the war.

On that tragic day, a group of border guards led by Master Sergeant Maslak engaged a superior enemy force supported by tanks. During the clash, the Ukrainian warriors captured 10 enemy soldiers. Oleksandr Maslak successfully struck and destroyed an enemy tank along with its crew using an NLAW anti-tank missile system. Tragically, he was killed by a direct hit from another enemy tank during the engagement.

Honoring His Memory

By a decree of the President of Ukraine (No. 545/2023) dated August 28, 2023, Oleksandr Maslak was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine and received the Order of the Golden Star. A farewell ceremony for the fallen soldier was held on February 25, 2023. He was memorialized at the Holy Resurrection Cathedral (OCU) in the center of Sumy and buried with full military honors at the Alley of Glory in Baranivka Cemetery in Sumy. He is survived by his parents, wife, daughter, and son.

On January 19, 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented 30 certificates for apartments to members of the Defense Forces who had been awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine and to the families of fallen Heroes. One of these certificates was presented to the family of Master Sergeant Oleksandr Maslak, serving as a further recognition of his sacrifice and a tribute to the memory of the fallen defender. This act is part of a broader state effort to support military personnel and their families during the ongoing conflict.
