New Police Chief Appointed in Khmelnytskyi Region Following Corruption Scandal
Leadership Change in Khmelnytskyi Regional Police
According to Главком: National Police Chief Ivan Vyhivskyi has introduced Ivan Ishchenko as the new head of the Khmelnytskyi regional police force. Ishchenko, who previously led the police in Chernihiv region, replaces Ruslan Herasymchuk, who had held the position for nearly six years since July 2020. The leadership shift comes after the exposure of illegal activities involving regional police officials.
Corruption Uncovered and Consequences
The Security Service of Ukraine and the Prosecutor General's Office identified misconduct among certain officials, leading to searches of top National Police figures. During these operations, authorities seized:
- a luxury fleet of six vehicles,
- five Swiss watches,
- firearms and bladed weapons,
- mobile phones,
- cash in various currencies totaling over 22.6 million Ukrainian hryvnias.
The National Police leadership has suspended officials implicated in the criminal proceedings from their duties. The Ministry of Internal Affairs also announced the dismissal of a driver from the Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, who is a subject of the investigation.
In his address, Ivan Vyhivskyi emphasized the modern role of the police force:
“Today, the police have a broad range of functions, including combat roles. But our primary duty is to maintain law and order, combat crime, and ensure the protection of citizens' rights and freedoms.”
He further stated:
“We must remember that our only common enemy is the Russian Federation. Therefore, all law enforcement agencies must work together for results. This is a matter of national survival.”
The Khmelnytskyi regional police are now tasked with setting clear priorities, including:
- maximizing response speed to security threats,
- documenting war crimes committed by Russia,
- ensuring public safety,
- supporting the Defense Forces and maintaining internal discipline within the system.
These objectives have become critically important amid current challenges.
This change in police leadership for Khmelnytskyi region highlights serious internal issues within law enforcement that demand urgent resolution. The seizure of expensive assets and the detention of officials point to deep-seated violations that could undermine public trust in the police. Given his previous experience, new chief Ivan Ishchenko aims to focus on improving efficiency and transparency in the region's police operations-a particularly vital goal during ongoing military aggression and security threats.
The recent changes in the Khmelnytskyi police force come in the wake of a significant corruption scandal that led to the removal of the previous police chief.
