Introducing a New Hub Dedicated to Artificial General Intelligence Research

According to НВ — Техно: On September 20, 2023, Google and DeepMind announced the establishment of a specialized center focused on Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This initiative aims to foster responsible dialogue and oversight surrounding AI advancements. Leading the center are Shane Legg, James Manyika, and Demis Hassabis. One of their key objectives includes creating a U.S.-based organization responsible for evaluating cutting-edge AI models.

Center’s Vision and Strategic Plans

The center proposes that companies voluntarily submit their AI models for review at least 30 days before public release. Eventually, this evaluation process could become a mandatory prerequisite for launching AI systems within the United States. Assessment methodologies will initially be developed collaboratively with industry stakeholders before transitioning to confidential internal testing. Depending on the risk level, regulations might tighten, potentially leading to coordinated slowdowns in AI development, as highlighted by Demis Hassabis.

DeepMind security researchers Rogin Shah and Anca Dragan contributed essays exploring the step-by-step verification of AI reasoning processes. Additional essays address economic policies and principles aimed at ensuring human flourishing alongside AGI progress. Notably, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has called for regulating the pace of advanced AI development. These collective efforts emphasize the importance of guiding AGI evolution with safety and ethical considerations at the forefront.

The proposed evaluation measures represent a significant stride toward establishing regulatory frameworks for technologies with profound societal impact. Engaging AI developers in the testing phase can help identify potential risks early, ensuring new innovations align with ethical standards and public interest.

As the dialogue around AI safety intensifies, experts are increasingly sounding alarms about the potential risks associated with powerful AI systems. A recent warning from an OpenAI researcher highlights concerns regarding the challenges of maintaining control over advanced artificial intelligence. This underscores the urgency of the newly established AGI research hub's mission to ensure ethical oversight in AI development.
