This was not the first time the Novatek-Ust-Luga site came under attack. On the night of August 14, Ukrainian forces struck the same complex, causing another major blaze. Earlier, on March 25, a night drone raid led the port to temporarily halt shipments of crude oil and refined products. Satellite imagery later confirmed serious damage at the Ust-Luga Oil terminal, including the complete destruction of one berth.

"On September 1, 2026, operators from the Active Actions Department and Unmanned Systems Department of the HUR, in coordination with Ukraine's Defense Forces, struck the Novatek-Ust-Luga complex in Leningrad Oblast as part of a deepstrike operation," the HUR said in a statement.

The repeated strikes around Ust-Luga, a port deemed vital to Russia's economic interests, reflect Ukraine's broader strategic campaign. By damaging key infrastructure, Kyiv aims to disrupt the flow of Russian petroleum products and undermine the country's economic stability.
