A Grandmother's Tribute: Wedding Savings Used to Send Ukrainian Flag to U.S. Congress After Guard Soldier's Death
Airfield Tragedy in Oleksandria
According to МВС: On April 15, 2022, a missile strike on an airfield in Oleksandria claimed the life of 25-year-old Guardsman Denys Karpenko. The attack, carried out with Kalibr-type cruise missiles, also killed five of his comrades:
- Mykola Volozhskyi
- Maksym Melnichok
- Oleg Zabolotnyi
- Anatolii Nazarenko
- Oleksandr Pryvedenyi
Denys Karpenko, who served at the National Guard's Guard Aviation Base, had been married for only a few days before the tragedy, having wed his wife Kateryna on April 9, 2022. A trained engineer, he led a group responsible for the preparation and regulation of identification systems. From the first days of the full-scale invasion, Denys worked around the clock to ensure the operational readiness of aviation equipment at the airfield. The Kalibr missiles used in this attack are a primary long-range weapon in Russia's arsenal, frequently targeting Ukrainian infrastructure.
Honoring a Fallen Hero
To honor her grandson's memory, his grandmother used money she had saved for his wedding to purchase fabric for a Ukrainian flag, which was then delivered to the U.S. Congress. Details of this Hero are recorded in the memorial book of the Ministry of Internal Affairs system.
The deaths of Denys Karpenko and his fellow soldiers underscore the tragic human cost of the armed conflict and its profound impact on the personal lives of Ukrainian military personnel and their families. This act of remembrance highlights the enduring legacy of those who gave their lives for their country and their contribution to national defense. The delivery of the flag to the U.S. Congress symbolizes the international solidarity and support for Ukraine in its struggle to preserve its independence and sovereignty.
