Indian Engineers Develop Zeolite and Bamboo Biochar Concrete That Absorbs CO2 and Surpasses Standard Strength
Innovative Concrete with Enhanced Strength and Carbon Capture
According to НВ — Техно: A team of engineers from the Mepco Schlenk Engineering College in India has developed a novel concrete blend that not only offers greater durability but also actively absorbs carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Their findings were published in the journal Carbon Research. This new material incorporates zeolite and bamboo-derived biochar, making it an eco-friendly alternative with promising applications in modern infrastructure.
The concrete mix replaces fine aggregates with 25% and 50% zeolite and substitutes cement with bamboo biochar at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%. The optimal formulation, named ZB5, contains 50% zeolite and 1% bamboo biochar. This composition achieved a compressive strength of 38.49 MPa, outperforming conventional concrete by 7.48%. Additionally, its splitting tensile strength reached 4.39 MPa, marking a 15% improvement over standard mixes.
Environmental Benefits and Potential Uses
Testing showed that the new concrete can absorb approximately 1.2 grams of CO2 daily within a specialized carbonation chamber. Over a week, carbon dioxide penetrated 15 mm into the material. Given that cement production and fossil fuel consumption are major contributors to atmospheric CO2, this innovative concrete could play a significant role in climate change mitigation efforts.
Potential applications for this sustainable concrete include:
- Road surfaces
- Highway retaining walls
- Sewer infrastructure
“Under the leadership of Srinivasan Revathi, the research focused on two key ingredients: zeolite and bamboo biochar,” explained Revathi.
Further studies are planned to examine the long-term performance of the material and explore its feasibility for large-scale production.
This breakthrough stands to revolutionize traditional building materials by offering a solution that reduces greenhouse gas emissions. As the construction industry faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices amid global climate challenges, innovations like this concrete could be pivotal. Future research will also assess its economic viability to ensure widespread industrial adoption, supporting sustainable growth in infrastructure development worldwide.
In addition to innovative materials like bamboo biochar, advancements in cement production are also crucial for reducing carbon emissions. A recent development highlights a plasma-based method that dramatically decreases cement manufacturing time, potentially revolutionizing the construction industry further. This synergy of technologies could enhance sustainability efforts in infrastructure projects.
