According to НВ — Техно: An innovative Indian startup has pioneered a groundbreaking technique that merges dogs' extraordinary scent detection abilities with artificial intelligence to diagnose cancer by analyzing human breath. Using specially designed 3D-printed helmets equipped with sensors, researchers monitor dogs' brain activity and body language in real time during the diagnostic process. This approach was tested on over 1,500 patients across six hospitals, achieving an impressive accuracy rate exceeding 90% in identifying seven major cancer types.
Technique and Process
Among the team is Chloe, a rescue dog trained to participate in this project. Patients provide breath samples by exhaling into a cotton mask for ten minutes. These samples are then sealed and transported to a lab where the dogs inspect them without direct human contact. Dogs possess more than 300 million olfactory receptors-vastly surpassing the approximately 5 million found in humans-enabling them to perform thousands of scenting actions hourly, with every sniff analyzing a new sample.
