Iran's Influence on Religious Views in Azerbaijan

According to ХВИЛЯ: Expert Tamerlan Vagabov examines Iran's attempts to propagate its specific interpretation of Shia Islam within Azerbaijan and the resistance mounted by the Azerbaijani state. As a secular nation, Azerbaijan's cultural and religious traditions have long been shaped by the influence of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Vagabov notes that despite existing religious currents, the majority of citizens who deepen their religious knowledge are leaning toward Sunni Islam.

Religious Identity and External Influences

Sunni Islam in Azerbaijan is bolstered by external factors, such as Turkey, and was also influenced in the 1990s by Chechnya and Dagestan. By the late 20th century, these regions had become significant in shaping the religious identity of Azerbaijanis. Vagabov emphasizes that those in Azerbaijan who turn to a more observant form of Islam are nevertheless gravitating toward Sunni traditions.

Iran, however, maintains its own designs on Azerbaijan. According to Vagabov,

“Iran has never abandoned its plans and intentions to spread the radical ideology of its own interpretation of Shia Islam in Azerbaijan.”

In response, Azerbaijan's law enforcement and security services are actively working to neutralize this Iranian interference. These actions highlight the government's serious concern over the potential consequences of Iranian religious expansionism within the country.

The situation surrounding religious identity in Azerbaijan illustrates a complex interplay of cultural, political, and religious factors. On one hand, the country seeks to preserve its secular nature and avoid radicalization; on the other, it faces external pressure, particularly from Iran, which aims to sway the population's religious views. This dynamic presents a potential source of conflict and regional destabilization, requiring proactive measures from Azerbaijani authorities to maintain internal stability. Azerbaijan's strategic location and energy resources make it a focal point in the geopolitical and religious rivalry between Turkey and Iran.
