Iran Announces Military Alliance with Russia and China: Strategic Implications
Iran's Military Partnership with Russia and China
According to Главком: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has confirmed ongoing military cooperation between Iran, Russia, and China. He stated that Iran is supplying Russia with Shahed drones, which are being used in attacks against Ukraine. Araghchi added that Russia is now independently manufacturing drones based on the Shahed UAV platform, highlighting the depth of technological and military collaboration between the nations.
Long-Term Economic Deal with China
In 2021, Iran signed a 25-year economic cooperation agreement with China, centered on the sale of Iranian oil for export to China. Araghchi noted that Iran has a history of close collaboration with both Russia and China, and this partnership continues today across political, economic, and military domains. This alignment is part of a broader strategic shift, as these nations seek to counter Western influence and reshape global power dynamics.

Furthermore, Araghchi addressed the status of the Strait of Hormuz. He clarified that the strait is not completely closed but is inaccessible only to American and Israeli ships and tankers. Iran is also utilizing drones and reconnaissance data provided by Russia to conduct attacks on U.S. bases and neighboring countries, underscoring Tehran's assertive regional posture.
The Iranian Foreign Minister's statements underscore the growing significance of Tehran's alliance with Moscow and Beijing amid global geopolitical realignments. Military cooperation, particularly in drone production and supply, signals a strengthening axis that could have serious implications for regional security. Additionally, control over the Strait of Hormuz remains critically important, as this chokepoint is a vital route for global oil shipments, with the potential to significantly impact worldwide energy markets.
