Ireland Extends Temporary Protection for Ukrainian Refugees

According to Главком: Ireland has extended its Temporary Protection scheme for those fleeing the war in Ukraine until March 4, 2027. All documentation valid until March 4, 2024, remains in effect. This extension, approved by the Council of the European Union, provides beneficiaries with the right to:

  • Reside legally in Ireland;
  • Work without a separate permit;
  • Access healthcare, education, and social services;
  • Travel within other EU countries for up to 90 days.

This protection also applies to citizens of other countries, stateless persons, and third-country nationals who were beneficiaries of the Temporary Protection Directive and left Ukraine due to the war. The EU-wide directive itself has been extended to the same date.

New, Stricter Migration Rules in Ireland

Concurrently, Ireland is implementing stricter migration policies. Net migration to the country has nearly doubled since pre-pandemic levels, averaging 72,000 people per year since 2022. In response, the state accommodation period for new arrivals from Ukraine has been reduced from 90 days to just 30 days.

The extension of temporary protection underscores Ireland's ongoing commitment to supporting those displaced by the conflict. However, the shortened state accommodation period may pose significant challenges for new arrivals seeking stability. This move reflects a broader European trend of balancing humanitarian obligations with domestic pressures on housing and public services.
