Top Welcoming Nations for Expats in 2026

According to УНІАН — Туризм: William Russell, an international firm, has released a study ranking the most hospitable countries for expats in 2026. Iceland tops the list with a hospitality score of 8.94 out of 10. Luxembourg takes the second spot, followed by New Zealand in third place. Zurich, Switzerland, has been named the best city for expat living.

In Iceland, 84.2% of expats are employed, and migrants make up about a quarter of the population. Additionally, roughly 98% of Icelanders speak English, making integration smoother for newcomers. The cost of living in the country is comparable to that of Switzerland and Singapore, and in December, daylight lasts only about four hours.

Luxembourg, ranking second, also has a significant migrant population at 51.2%. New Zealand, meanwhile, allows skilled professionals up to age 55 to apply for visas, whereas Australia caps its visa applicants at age 45.

“Preparation for this stage is often more important than choosing the country itself,” said William Cooper, Director of William Russell.

Top 10 Most Welcoming Countries

According to the ranking, the top 10 most welcoming countries for expats in 2026 are as follows:

  • Iceland
  • Luxembourg
  • New Zealand
  • Australia
  • Switzerland
  • Ireland
  • Colombia
  • Czech Republic
  • Portugal
  • Austria

This list highlights the growing appeal of nations with high living standards and a friendly atmosphere for newcomers.

The William Russell ranking can serve as a key indicator for those planning an overseas move. Choosing a country with strong expat support and hospitality can greatly influence the adaptation and integration process. By considering factors like job opportunities and language accessibility, potential migrants can better plan their relocation and avoid common pitfalls.

While Iceland shines as the most welcoming destination for expats, it is also noted for its high cost of living, making it the world's priciest country to reside in.
