Strategic frontiers of Ukraine in the south are under threat

The international community is once again discussing the threat of losing strategic frontiers in southern Ukraine. According to the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), future negotiations between the US and Russia may include issues regarding the return of control over the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions to Kyiv. These territories are important for Ukraine's security, economy, and access to the sea.

The Kherson region plays a key role in ensuring access to the Dnieper, which serves as an important defensive barrier. Control over the eastern bank of the Dnieper could open up possibilities for attacks on the right bank part of the region and other areas, making Ukrainian positions highly vulnerable.

Access to the Black Sea is crucial for the export of Ukrainian grain and other goods, which makes it of immense importance to Ukraine's economy. A direct outlet to the sea also opens up new opportunities for Russia.

Currently, Ukrainian artillery and drones are complicating the occupiers' ability to gather sufficient forces for crossing the Dnieper. However, any ceasefire could create new opportunities for the enemy.

Additional risks and the US position

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, is another risk factor. Control over it holds significant energy and political importance. US President Donald Trump has expressed his intention to help Ukraine regain these territories, as the strategic situation in the south remains very dangerous.

It is also worth noting that the occupiers have assembled an External Crisis Center at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which poses an even greater threat to the region.
