Anarchist Suspects Apprehended in Italy

According to Главком: Italian law enforcement has detained seven members of a radical anarchist group suspected of orchestrating a series of attacks on railway infrastructure during the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. The suspects are accused of multiple strikes on rail facilities, with the first incidents occurring on February 9. These events have raised concerns about security vulnerabilities ahead of the global sporting event, which is expected to draw massive international attention.

On that day, the radicals set fire to a railway switch near Pesaro and damaged electrical cables close to Bologna, leaving behind a homemade explosive device. A subsequent wave of attacks took place on February 14, when explosive devices detonated on the high-speed rail lines connecting Rome-Florence and Rome-Naples. The total damage from these actions has exceeded 450,000 euros.

Government Response and Fallout

Authorities have taken five suspects into custody, while two others will remain under house arrest. All detainees face charges of terrorist activity, forming a criminal organization, and subverting the state order. The group claimed responsibility for the sabotage through a specially created website, where they published a manifesto describing their actions as a protest against state institutions and infrastructure projects.

The organization also stated its involvement in an attack on the Transalpine oil pipeline that occurred in the spring. The group's cell operated out of Rome, maintaining connections with like-minded individuals in Milan, Bologna, and Naples. Law enforcement continues to conduct searches and investigations to determine whether other individuals may be linked to these crimes.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commented: 'I thanked the security forces for their work and emphasized that the state will continue to respond firmly to any attempts to attack strategic infrastructure and threaten the country's safety.'

This situation underscores the heightened risks of terrorist attacks during major international events like the Olympics, necessitating reinforced security measures. The actions of radical groups targeting critical infrastructure pose a serious threat not only to public safety but also to Italy's international reputation.
