Canada Pledges $900 Million to Ukraine for Air Defense and Drones
New Military Aid Package from Canada
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced a fresh $900 million military support package from Canada. The announcement followed a meeting between Zelenskyy and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the NATO summit, which is being held in Ankara on July 7–8. A significant portion of this aid will be allocated to strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
The two leaders agreed to prepare a bilateral agreement in the form of a Drone Deal, which will focus on cooperation in drone manufacturing and the development of new defense technologies. At the same time, Canada has invited Ukraine to become a founding member of a new international bank dedicated to defense, security, and resilience. This institution will work to attract investment and advance defense-industrial capacity, as well as technologies that have been proven in combat.
Zelenskyy’s Remarks at the NATO Summit
Zelenskyy, who arrived in Ankara on July 7, stated during the NATO summit that Ukraine is neutralizing approximately 30,000 Russian troops every month. He also noted that there is virtually no major Russian oil refinery that has not been targeted by Ukrainian drones or missiles. According to him, Ukraine now possesses the most advanced drone capabilities in the world.
“Our top priority is to get more air defense systems. Protecting lives is what matters most.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The president urged international partners to join the Drone Deal initiative and to support licensed production of the Patriot system in Ukraine. He also called for accelerating the creation of a European ballistic missile defense system.
This latest military aid package from Canada highlights the growing international support for Ukraine as the war continues. Cooperation in drone technology and new defense systems could significantly enhance the capabilities of the Ukrainian armed forces, especially given modern threats. Ukraine’s potential membership in the new international bank may also unlock fresh opportunities for investment and the expansion of its defense sector, which is critically important during the ongoing conflict.
As Ukraine continues to bolster its defense capabilities, it's crucial to understand the broader context of these developments.
