Canada Revamps Immigration to Bolster Defense, Targets Skilled Ukrainians
Canada Overhauls Express Entry Immigration System
According to Главком: In a move to strengthen its national security, the Canadian government has announced a major update to its Express Entry immigration system. This reform is designed to attract highly skilled professionals, particularly for the defense sector. Prime Minister Mark Carney presented a new defense strategy aimed at enhancing the country's military capabilities in response to growing global threats, including those from Russia. Canada's specific concerns about Russian advancements in space capabilities underscore the urgency of these new immigration initiatives.
New Categories for Skilled Professionals
Under the new rules, Canada will actively seek highly qualified military personnel, scientists, and aviation specialists. Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab emphasized that
"Canada's future depends on a workforce ready for a changing economy."
The existing Express Entry categories will remain in place, including:
- French-speaking candidates
- Healthcare workers
- Skilled trades professionals
The new categories being added to the system will include:
- Researchers
- Senior executives
- Transportation sector workers, specifically pilots and aircraft mechanics
- Foreign doctors with Canadian experience
- Highly skilled foreign military candidates, such as military doctors, nurses, and pilots
The new defense strategy, announced on Tuesday, outlines several key objectives:
- An 85% increase in government investment in defense-related research and development
- A more than 240% increase in defense industry revenues
- A 50% increase in defense product exports
- The creation of up to 125,000 new jobs over the next decade
Canada has committed to raising its defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. This policy shift reflects a broader trend among NATO allies to increase military preparedness. These steps demonstrate the Canadian government's serious approach to fortifying national security and recruiting foreign talent who can contribute to the country's defense sector development. The immigration system update and the new defense strategy form part of a comprehensive plan to adapt to global challenges and ensure stability amid rising geopolitical threats. This initiative is also expected to strengthen the economy through job creation and the advancement of defense technologies.
