Hazardous Conditions on Kyiv's Walkways

According to Главком: Pedestrians in Kyiv are navigating treacherous, icy sidewalks that remain uncleared and unsalted, creating significant risks. Residents report particularly slippery conditions near the Politekhnichna stop, where a lack of gritting and clearing is endangering those on foot.

On January 10th, resident Gleb Vyshlinsky filed a complaint with the city's 1551 Contact Center regarding the dangerous walkways. A report three days later, on January 13th, stated that the pavement had been treated, but the workers had mistakenly gritted the wrong side. This kind of error is especially hazardous during freezing weather when ice forms on the streets.

War's Impact on City Infrastructure

The situation in the capital is further complicated by the aftermath of a massive attack on Kyiv on January 9th. Of the 6,000 buildings in the city, approximately 300 remain without heating, and the first meeting of a special headquarters to address the consequences of Russian strikes on energy infrastructure has already been held. This creates additional challenges for ensuring resident safety and comfort, stretching municipal resources thin.

Kyiv residents have expressed their frustration with the ongoing situation. One resident remarked:

'Klychko is not to blame for anything; he is a wonderful mayor, everything was supposed to be protected by air defense. My question is: what good is air defense if they can't clear the stairs near the Politekhnichna stop since last Friday?'

Another Kyiv resident, Gleb Vyshlinsky, added: 'They clean, but they don't put anything down on a kilometer of wide sidewalk with heavy traffic along the Dnipro embankment, and there is constant ice there.'

Thus, the issue of sidewalk safety in Kyiv remains pressing, and residents are awaiting improvements. The hazardous conditions underscore the critical importance of proper winter maintenance for urban infrastructure, especially when a city faces the compounded strain of wartime challenges. Increased attention to pedestrian safety is essential to reduce injuries and improve the quality of life for the capital's inhabitants. The relevant authorities must take urgent measures to resolve this problem to ensure safe passage for all citizens.
