Kyiv Announces Major Cuts to Outdoor Lighting to Save Energy

According to ХВИЛЯ: In response to a critical strain on the national power grid, Kyiv's City Defense Council has mandated severe restrictions on electricity use for outdoor lighting, effective January 16, 2023. These measures are part of a broader national effort to conserve energy following widespread damage to Ukraine's infrastructure.

The new regulations will result in the complete shutdown of:

  • Architectural and decorative lighting on buildings, residential blocks, and structures;
  • Illumination for advertising installations and informational signs.

Street lighting intensity will be reduced to just 20% of its normal capacity to cut power consumption. In areas where dimming is technically impossible, only 50% of the streetlamps will remain operational.

The Kyiv City State Administration has urged residents to use electricity sparingly during these restrictions. These steps are deemed essential for maintaining the city's energy stability under current challenging circumstances.

Impact of the Restrictions on Energy Security

The lighting limits form a key component of a comprehensive strategy to conserve electricity amid an ongoing energy crisis triggered by external factors. Implementing such measures is expected to significantly impact the city's energy security and resource conservation, while also affecting the daily lives of Kyiv's residents as they adapt to the new conditions.

Public support for energy-saving initiatives is crucial for maintaining the stability of Ukraine's power grid.
