In Kyiv, preparations are underway for an increase in fare for public transport due to a sharp rise in costs. The real cost of a subway trip already exceeds 64 UAH, prompting the city to reconsider its fare policy. This is reported by The Page.

Cost of Travel in Kyiv: What a Trip Really Costs

According to the transport department of the Kyiv City State Administration, the economics of transportation in the capital have significantly changed. Current fares do not cover actual expenses, and the difference is compensated daily from the city budget.

Official calculations provided by the Kyiv City State Administration at the request of The Page show:

  • KP «Kyiv Metro» — 64.53 UAH per trip,
  • KP «Kyivpastrans» — 37.57 UAH per trip in surface transport.

Despite this, passengers continue to pay significantly less than the actual cost of transportation.

Fare Increase in Kyiv: What Klitschko Said

The city's mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the intention to revise fares. According to him, the city can no longer maintain transport at the expense of multibillion-dollar subsidies.

Klitschko emphasized that the need to finance Kyiv's energy resilience ahead of the winter period compels the authorities to gradually bring transport costs closer to an economically justified level.

Current fares are formally based on the Kyiv City State Administration's order from March 2020. Meanwhile, the basic cost of travel in the capital has not been revised since 2018, and it remains one of the lowest in Ukraine.

It is worth noting that transport operators in Lviv are insisting on an increase in fare to 42 UAH, but the city authorities are looking for a compromise.
