Kyiv Street Renamed in Honor of Fallen Soldier

According to Главком: On March 26, the Kyiv City Council approved the renaming of Red Street to Vasyl Kopan Street. This change is part of a broader, nearly complete city-wide initiative to remove names associated with the country's Soviet and colonial past. This process of 'de-Russification' and 'decolonization' of Kyiv's place names has been a significant national project since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. Only three specific exceptions now allow for further street name changes in the capital.

Honoring the Legacy of Vasyl Kopan

The street now bears the name of Vasyl Kopan, who served as a reconnaissance commander in the 12th Special Purpose Brigade 'Azov' of Ukraine's National Guard. He was celebrated for his heroism and received the nation's highest state awards for his service.

"The names of Kyiv's streets must be etched with the memory of those who defended our state at the cost of their own lives. Vasyl Yuriyovych Kopan was a reconnaissance commander in the 12th Special Purpose Brigade 'Azov' of Ukraine's National Guard. He was awarded the highest state honors and embodies the resilience of a new Ukrainian pantheon. His name belongs not only to military history but also to the living memory of the capital, which honors its Heroes with dignity, firmness, and without compromise."

The renaming effort is driven by a desire to honor national heroes and create a new toponymic landscape that reflects contemporary values. The city council has outlined that future street name changes or assignments in Kyiv are only permissible under three exceptional categories:

  • Naming newly created urban objects;
  • Restoring a historical name or correcting a name to comply with Ukrainian orthography rules;
  • Renaming based on a conclusion from the Institute of National Memory.

This renaming represents a crucial step in shaping national identity and collective memory, as it demonstrates society's commitment to honoring those who made significant contributions to Ukraine's fight for independence. The ongoing process of de-Russifying Kyiv's place names highlights a growing public consciousness regarding the historical figures and events that define modern Ukrainian identity.
