Protecting Kyiv’s Chestnut Trees

This initiative involves assessing the health of the trees and soil, monitoring pest and disease spread, and evaluating moisture conditions alongside the effectiveness of current care and protection methods. To combat the invasive horse-chestnut leaf miner (Cameraria ohridella), microinjection treatments have been employed, demonstrating promising results in trials.

Chestnuts hold a special place as one of Kyiv’s symbols, making their conservation a significant priority. The leaf miner damages horse chestnut leaves, causing them to yellow and fall prematurely. Experimental trees treated with microinjections have been planted across municipal green space maintenance sites and the M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. However, these treatments do not address other factors that weaken the trees.

Key Factors Affecting Chestnut Tree Health

The vitality of Kyiv’s chestnut trees is influenced by several environmental pressures:

• Elevated temperatures
• Insufficient soil moisture
• Air pollution
• Soil compaction and salinization
• Limited root space
• Presence of additional pests and fungal diseases

The impact of the leaf miner is especially severe during dry years. As part of the 'Choose a Tree for Khreshchatyk' campaign, 10 trees representing nine species and cultivars were planted in Kyiv’s city center, with oak, elm, and maple demonstrating good health so far.

The Department’s priorities focus on ensuring adequate soil volume for roots, maintaining proper water regimes, reducing soil salinity and compaction, and continuously monitoring the phytosanitary condition of trees. Ongoing collaboration with scientific institutions aims to conduct comprehensive evaluations of chestnut stands, covering tree and soil health, root systems, water availability, pest and disease prevalence, and care techniques. The findings will guide the development of evidence-based recommendations for the long-term preservation of Kyiv’s chestnuts.
