According to Главком: Ukrainian MP Serhiy Nahorniak has stated that Kyiv's thermal power plants (TPPs) can be restored following Russian missile attacks. Repair work is currently underway at one of the most heavily damaged facilities, with the immediate goal of getting it operational again. However, a full restoration of Ukraine's energy infrastructure is a complex and lengthy process, hampered by a critical shortage of necessary equipment.

For now, the focus is on emergency repairs to restart the TPP, not on a comprehensive rebuild. Nahorniak emphasized that the recovery requires significant resources and time. Repairing or replacing equipment at Ukrenergo substations could take weeks or even months.

Challenges for the Capital's Energy Grid

Before the war, Kyiv and the surrounding region were largely self-sufficient in electricity generation thanks to TPP-5, TPP-6, and the Darnytsia TPP, which together provided roughly 1500 MW of capacity. Russia's mass attacks have damaged at least 80% of Ukraine's energy infrastructure nationwide. Despite this, reports claiming that one of Kyiv's TPPs is beyond repair are false.

The issues facing the capital's energy sector highlight the severe challenges in restoring and ensuring a stable power supply. Given the equipment deficit and extensive damage, rebuilding Ukraine's energy grid is an urgent national priority. The situation underscores the vulnerability of critical civilian infrastructure during wartime.
