North Korea's Missile System Tests

According to Главком: On the anniversary of the start of the 1950-1953 Korean War, North Korea conducted tests of missile systems, tactical ballistic missiles, and artillery. Kim Jong Un personally monitored the tests and expressed satisfaction with the outcomes. The evaluations included:

  • an upgraded 240mm 24-round multiple rocket launcher;
  • tactical ballistic missiles;
  • a 155mm self-propelled howitzer.

The improved rocket launcher features an autonomous precision guidance system, and its firing range has been extended to 90 kilometers.

North Korea's Strategic Direction

Kim Jong Un emphasized that Pyongyang is pursuing automation, extended range, and ultra-precision in its weaponry. The purpose of these tests is to strengthen defenses along the southern border with South Korea. South Korea's Ministry of Unification stated that these tests are likely part of North Korea's five-year defense development plan.

Experts, including Lim Eul-chul, a professor at Kyungnam University's Institute for Far Eastern Studies, believe North Korea's aim is to fully integrate tactical nuclear and strike capabilities into frontline units, placing all of South Korea's territory within range. In May, Pyongyang also tested a combination of tactical ballistic missiles, artillery rockets, and AI-guided cruise missiles. Additionally, North Korea has announced plans to deploy new 155mm self-propelled howitzers along the border with South Korea by the end of 2026.

These tests are part of rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, where North Korea's military activities are causing concern for South Korea and its allies, including the United States. Given the historical context and the strategies being implemented by Pyongyang, it is important to monitor the international community's subsequent reactions and potential shifts in the regional military balance.

In light of North Korea's ongoing military advancements, it is crucial to consider the broader implications of Kim Jong Un's recent activities. For instance, his inspection of a new uranium enrichment facility underscores the regime's commitment to expanding its nuclear capabilities, further intensifying concerns among neighboring countries and the international community.
