China offers to mediate peace in Ukraine, Kremlin spokesperson says

According to Главком: Beijing has expressed willingness to help resolve the war in Ukraine through peaceful means, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. He stated that the issue was raised during talks between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping. Peskov noted that China is genuinely prepared to contribute to steering the conflict onto a peaceful track.

“We are grateful to our Chinese friends for this,” the spokesperson added.

Putin-Xi summit in Beijing: Key topics and outcomes

The meeting between Putin and Xi took place on May 21, 2026, in Beijing. The main topics of discussion included:

  • deepening bilateral partnership
  • criticism of U.S. foreign policy
  • the war in Iran

However, Peskov confirmed that China’s 2023 peace plan for Ukraine was not discussed.

“That plan was not discussed,” he clarified.

Additionally, no agreement was reached during the summit regarding the construction of the 'Power of Siberia-2' gas pipeline. Analyst Andriy Kovalenko confirmed this detail. The meeting concluded with a cultural performance: a Chinese military orchestra played Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s 'Dance of the Little Swans,' providing a memorable end to the official program.

China’s stated readiness to assist in peacefully resolving the Ukraine conflict signals Beijing’s growing role in global politics and its ambition to take on a more active part in international affairs. At the same time, the lack of discussion around a specific peace plan, along with the failure to secure agreements on key infrastructure projects, may point to underlying tensions in the Russia-China relationship. The situation remains fluid, and the next steps taken by both countries could significantly shape regional developments.

As China positions itself as a potential mediator in the ongoing conflict, it is essential to examine the broader implications of its involvement.
