Haifeng Heart: Transporting a Giant Offshore Energy Hub

According to НВ — Техно: China is currently moving the massive offshore power station known as Haifeng Heart, a structure that stands 44 meters tall. Built by the state-owned machinery giant ZPMC, the platform weighs 25,000 tons and measures 85.5 meters in length by 82.5 meters in width. Once operational, this energy hub is expected to supply around six billion kilowatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, supporting the Three Gorges Yangjiang Qingzhou V and Qingzhou VII projects.

Technological Milestones of the Haifeng Heart Project

Haifeng Heart has set six industry records. Notably, it is the first centralized offshore flexible transmission system to combine both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) technologies within a single framework. Its transmission capacity reaches 2,000 megawatts per unit. The offshore flexible DC transmission voltage is ±500 kilovolts, while the submarine DC cables operate at ±525 kilovolts, significantly reducing power losses over long distances.

“Haifeng Heart will serve the centralized submarine cable transmission project for the Three Gorges Yangjiang Qingzhou V and Qingzhou VII offshore wind farms,” the company’s press release states.

The system is located more than 100 kilometers from the shore, granting access to high-quality wind resources in deeper and more remote waters. According to ZPMC senior specialist Yan Bin, converting marine AC to DC helps minimize transmission losses, marking a crucial step forward for renewable energy development in the region.

As a result, the Haifeng Heart project showcases new possibilities in offshore energy, setting higher standards for power transmission technology.

The launch of Haifeng Heart represents a major advancement in renewable energy, especially amid growing global demand for clean power and carbon emission reductions. As China pushes forward with green initiatives, this project could serve as a model for other nations seeking to adopt innovative energy technologies. The positive outcomes from Haifeng Heart may encourage further investment in offshore wind farms and help accelerate the worldwide transition to more sustainable energy sources.

As the Haifeng Heart project pushes the boundaries of offshore energy technology, it's worth exploring other innovative solutions in the renewable sector. For instance, the new containerized hydrogen power station aims to replace conventional diesel generators, showcasing how diverse approaches can enhance sustainability and efficiency in energy production.
