Successful Launch of the Long March-10B Rocket

According to Главком: China's Long March-10B launch vehicle lifted off from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on Hainan Island at 12:15 local time, marking a milestone for the nation. For the first time in its history, China recovered the first stage of a rocket following a full orbital mission. After stage separation, a specialized recovery vessel captured the booster at sea-a major leap forward for the country's space program.

Significance of the Launch

Six minutes after separation, the first stage executed a controlled vertical descent. Meanwhile, the rocket's second stage successfully delivered a demonstration payload into orbit. This mission was the inaugural flight of the Long March-10B prototype, which can carry up to 16 metric tons to low Earth orbit.

The achievement places China as the second nation, after the United States, to successfully land an orbital-class reusable rocket booster on a maritime platform. During a previous test in February with the Long March-10A, the stage splashed down near the platform but was not captured. Attempts by private firm LandSpace and state-owned CASC to land a booster have so far been unsuccessful.

CNN described the launch as a breakthrough for China's space program.

According to CASC, this marks the nation's first-ever recovery of a first stage after a full orbital flight. China continues to expand its space presence, regularly launching Earth observation satellites and intensifying its lunar exploration rivalry with the United States. A second flight of the Long March-10B booster is planned before the end of this year, opening new possibilities for the country's space ambitions.
