A 3-Minute Charge: Chinese Researchers Unveil Breakthrough Battery
Next-Generation Battery Technology
According to НВ — Техно: On May 24, 2023, a selected group of Chinese developers introduced a new battery technology boasting an impressive energy density of 451.5 Wh/kg. This battery supports ultra-fast charging in just 3 minutes and can endure up to 700 charge-discharge cycles while retaining 81.9% of its original capacity.
A key feature of this new battery is its high-nickel cathode voltage of 4.7 V. Over 1,400 cycles, the battery achieves an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.1%, highlighting its strong performance. The battery uses polymer electrolytes based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with sulfolane as the primary plasticizer. Its casing is a flexible pouch design with an ultra-thin lithium-metal anode.
Potential of the New Battery
Additionally, the battery technology passed a nail penetration test, confirming its reliability. The Chinese developers plan to bring commercial systems to market between 2026 and 2027. These findings were published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, underscoring the scientific rigor behind this innovation.
This new battery could significantly reshape the market for electric vehicles and other devices requiring high energy and fast charging. Given the rapid pace of technological advancements in the field, it will be important to monitor the next steps of these Chinese developers and the reactions of competitors to this innovation. The expected market entry in the coming years may drive further investment in battery research and development, ultimately supporting a shift toward cleaner energy sources.
