Chinese Physicists Achieve Stable Quantum Network by Linking 13 Photonic Qubits Using Superconducting Chips
Breakthrough: A Quantum Network Comprising 13 Photonic Qubits
According to НВ — Техно: Researchers at Tsinghua University in China have made a significant advancement in quantum technology by successfully integrating 13 photonic qubits into a stable quantum network. This milestone was achieved through the innovative application of superconducting chips combined with nondestructive measurement techniques (QND), enabling expansion of quantum networks without photon loss. The study detailing these findings was published on October 12, 2023.
Experiment Details and Key Findings
The constructed system features 13 interacting photonic qubits, where quantum information is encoded in the precise arrival times of photons. Using an ultra-sensitive detector, photon pairs were converted into shared Bell states. Notably, the team accomplished multipartite entanglement encompassing all 13 qubits simultaneously-a considerable feat in quantum physics. The superconducting components are capable of resetting residual states for reuse, enhancing the network's overall efficiency.
Although 13 qubits represent a new laboratory record, the network is not yet suitable for practical quantum computing applications due to limitations in detector precision and photon generation efficiency.
Hongyi Zhang, one of the lead researchers, emphasized, "Large photonic graph states are essential resources for quantum communication, networks, and measurement-based quantum computing."
This accomplishment marks a crucial step toward the realization of quantum networks that could revolutionize how information is transmitted and processed. Despite existing technical challenges such as improving detector accuracy, the ability to create complex entangled states opens promising avenues for quantum communication and computing technologies. Ongoing research aims to develop even more sophisticated quantum systems capable of performing tasks beyond the reach of classical computers.
As researchers continue to explore the frontiers of quantum technology, the recent achievement of quantum teleportation across 100 channels simultaneously showcases the rapid advancements in this field. This breakthrough not only complements the work done at Tsinghua University but also highlights the potential for enhancing quantum communication systems.
