Vitali Klitschko Meets with Ivan Marchuk

According to Главком: During a meeting with renowned painter Ivan Marchuk, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko erroneously referred to him as a Hero of Ukraine. It is important to note that Marchuk has never received this title and has no interest in obtaining it. Klitschko presented the artist with a Badge of Honor from the Kyiv community, while Marchuk gave the mayor a signed copy of his catalog 'Paths of Life: The Eternal Wanderer.'

An exhibition of Marchuk's works titled 'I Shook This World' is currently on display at the Museum of the History of the City of Kyiv and has been extended until June 21. In 2021, Marchuk was awarded the 'National Legend of Ukraine' distinction and received the Order of Liberty. More recently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy honored the artist with the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, Fifth Degree.

Ivan Marchuk's Own Words

“I am not a hero-the heroes are on the front lines. They defend the homeland that I have glorified on canvas!” - Ivan Marchuk

Despite his prolific career and widespread recognition, Marchuk remains humble about his achievements. He will celebrate his 90th birthday on May 12, 2026.

This incident highlights the importance of acknowledging cultural figures in Ukraine, especially artists like Ivan Marchuk, whose work has become a symbol of Ukrainian identity. The mayor's slip-up may reflect broader societal perceptions of cultural contributors and the need for a clearer understanding of their role within the nation's history and contemporary life.

This recognition is not the only milestone in Ivan Marchuk's illustrious career. Recently, he was awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise by President Zelenskyy, further solidifying his status as a significant cultural figure in Ukraine. As the artist approaches his 90th birthday, his contributions continue to resonate within the nation’s artistic landscape.
