The Promise of Cogeneration Plants for Kyiv

According to ХВИЛЯ: Vladimir Anufriev, a heating supply expert, has outlined the significant potential for installing cogeneration plants in Kyiv, highlighting the largely untapped resource of waste heat from industrial facilities. He stressed that this waste heat represents a major potential energy source for Ukraine. Anufriev emphasized that preparing a skilled workforce to operate and maintain this new equipment is a critical priority for the nation's energy security.

Anufriev pointed out that compressor stations, which consume vast amounts of electricity, could become a vital component in the heating supply network.

“Any production involving high temperatures or large engines, like compressor stations, is a candidate. They consume a tremendous amount of electricity, and 80-90% of that energy is converted to heat,” he explained.

Capturing this thermal energy could reduce strain on the national power grid, transforming industrial consumers into energy producers as well.

The Critical Need for Workforce Development

For cogeneration stations to function effectively, Anufriev underscored the necessity of creating specialized operational teams.

“You need an entire team to manage it. This involves maintenance, operation, feeding electricity into the grid, and synchronization with the network. These are complex management tasks that require trained personnel,” the expert emphasized.

He also noted that even the best equipment will fail without proper upkeep: “We can install the finest equipment, but if you don't know how to maintain it, it will simply become scrap within a year.” Therefore, workforce training is a cornerstone for the successful implementation of cogeneration projects.

The prospects for deploying cogeneration plants in Kyiv could substantially reshape Ukraine's energy landscape, reducing reliance on traditional power sources. This push for modernizing energy infrastructure comes as the country seeks greater resilience and efficiency. Utilizing waste heat would not only boost industrial efficiency but also promote the greening of the energy sector. Simultaneously, the focus on training personnel to manage these new technologies is crucial for ensuring their long-term effectiveness and operational sustainability.
