Viktor Lakhno Apprehended Near Court
According to Главком: Former Azov soldier Viktor Lakhno was taken into custody after an altercation with ex-Presidential Office head Andriy Yermak outside a Kyiv courthouse. The incident unfolded following a hearing to determine a preventive measure for Yermak, during which an unidentified individual hurled an egg in his direction. Lakhno confirmed his detention, stating:
“Someone simply ordered my arrest and transport to the station”
.
Lakhno, a former prisoner of war and Azov serviceman, shared a video showing people shouting that 'the Ukrainian people do not respect him.' He is known for participating in the aerial breakout from Azovstal and returning from Russian captivity. After his arrest, he was taken to a police precinct. Such incidents may fall under Article 173 of Ukraine’s Code on Administrative Offenses, which carries penalties like fines or up to 15 days of arrest.
Andriy Yermak’s Legal Situation
On May 12, the High Anti-Corruption Court declined to impose a preventive measure on Andriy Yermak, as the defense team had not yet reviewed the case materials spanning 16 volumes. Lawyer Ihor Fomin requested a postponement of the proceedings. The prosecution, however, sought pretrial detention for Yermak with an alternative bail of 180 million hryvnias. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) have notified Yermak of suspicion in a case involving the laundering of 460 million hryvnias, linked to the construction of a cottage village in the village of Kozyn, Kyiv region. The funds may be tied to corruption schemes surrounding Energoatom.
In response to the crowd’s chants, Yermak himself asked:
“Are you speaking for the entire Ukrainian nation?”
This incident has sparked widespread public debate, not only due to Lakhno’s detention but also because of the gravity of the accusations against the former head of the Presidential Office.
The situation underscores societal tensions surrounding corruption allegations against high-ranking officials and the public’s reaction to such scandals. The arrest of Lakhno, a former military figure, may reflect growing citizen anxiety over justice and accountability among officials, as well as how public sentiment can shape law enforcement in Ukraine.
The ongoing legal troubles surrounding Andriy Yermak have drawn significant attention, especially in light of recent developments. Following the altercation involving Viktor Lakhno, the situation escalated as the court has now issued an arrest order for Yermak, setting a substantial bail amount. This case highlights the broader issues of corruption and accountability within Ukraine's political landscape.
