Denmark's Queen Margrethe Hospitalized for Chest Pain Related to Angina
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark Admitted to Hospital
According to Главком: At age 86, the former Danish monarch-who abdicated the throne in 2024-was taken to Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen’s main medical center, after experiencing chest pain diagnosed as angina. She will remain there through the weekend for monitoring and further tests. In a statement, the Danish royal court noted that
“Her Majesty is tired but in good spirits.”
Her Reign and Recent Health Concerns
Margrethe II ascended to the throne on January 14, 1972, at 31 years old, and ruled for more than five decades. She stepped down in January 2024 in favor of her eldest son, King Frederik X. Her decision to abdicate was announced during her New Year’s speech the previous year. Earlier in 2024, she was also hospitalized after a fall at Fredensborg Castle.
The queen is the daughter of King Frederik IX, who passed away before her coronation. While her current condition is described as stable, the news has stirred public concern given her prominent role in Danish society.
Margrethe’s hospitalization highlights the deep connection Danes feel to their former monarch, especially following the recent transfer of power to her son. Her long reign came to symbolize national stability, so any health issues naturally attract widespread attention and affect public sentiment toward the monarchy.
