Ukrainian Society of the Blind’s Kramatorsk Facility Resumes Production in Kyiv Region, Employing 29 People

Revival of the Kramatorsk Training and Manufacturing Enterprise

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Following a Russian missile strike that halted operations in Kramatorsk, the Ukrainian Society of the Blind’s training and manufacturing facility relocated to the Kyiv region in 2024. Production has now restarted at an old factory site in Yahotyn, which had been inactive for over two decades. Currently, the enterprise employs 29 individuals, including 19 people with disabilities and 18 internally displaced persons from Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Before the full-scale invasion, the facility employed approximately 50 workers. Renovating the premises and restoring utilities required an investment exceeding 2 million hryvnias from the company’s own funds. Additionally, USAID contributed a $500,000 grant to purchase new equipment, aiding the recovery process.

Manufacturing Output and Social Commitment

The factory produces corrugated cardboard and fully finished packaging boxes. Monthly output now reaches between 230,000 and 245,000 square meters, a significant increase compared to around 50,000 square meters before the war in Kramatorsk. The enterprise also supports its workforce by covering transportation expenses and assisting with housing rentals when necessary.

Despite these achievements, the company faces ongoing challenges, primarily the lack of heating. Last winter, freezing temperatures and power outages forced employees to work only brief shifts each day. To address this, the enterprise has developed a heating system project, ordered required equipment, and is currently raising funds for infrastructure upgrades.

Looking ahead, the facility plans to expand its team by 4 to 5 more employees, prioritizing internally displaced persons, people with disabilities, and veterans. This approach reflects a commitment not only to restoring production but also to supporting socially vulnerable groups.

This situation highlights the critical need to rebuild manufacturing across Ukraine, especially during wartime, when many individuals face unemployment.

By reopening operations and creating job opportunities for marginalized populations, the enterprise contributes to regional social stability. Support from international organizations like USAID plays a vital role in revitalizing Ukraine’s economy amid ongoing crises.
