Kremlin Sees No Grounds Yet for Resuming Peace Talks; Zelensky Open to Meeting

Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Russian president, emphasized that while Russia remains open to diplomatic solutions, it perceives a lack of similar willingness from Ukraine. Peskov stated,

“there are currently no grounds to shift to a peaceful negotiation track.”

Regarding calls from US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for an energy ceasefire, the Kremlin dismissed these as mere rhetoric, especially given the ongoing military aid to Ukraine. Peskov also said that for a personal meeting between Putin and Zelensky to take place, the Ukrainian leader must travel to Moscow. He assured,

“All necessary security guarantees will be provided to him. He fully understands the decisions that need to be made. Holding high-level talks before expert-level groundwork is completed would be pointless and a waste of time.”

Outlook on Conflict Resolution

Zelensky has expressed his willingness to meet with Vladimir Putin and is hopeful that Donald Trump will assist in ending the war before winter. On September 22, in New York at the start of talks with Trump, Zelensky voiced optimism that the conflict could conclude ahead of the cold season. Trump responded by affirming his readiness to enforce the 'Graham Act' sanctions against Russia if necessary.

The Kremlin also rejected Zelensky’s suggestion of a meeting during the G20 summit in the US. Additionally, Jared Kushner commented that a peace deal remains incomplete because Ukraine refuses to withdraw to the line outlined by Putin. European countries continue to supply arms to Ukraine, which Peskov condemned as supporting "terrorist activities" by Kyiv’s government.

The atmosphere surrounding peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine remains tense, with both sides unable to find common ground. The Kremlin insists that Ukraine must show genuine commitment to compromise, while Ukrainian leadership relies on international backing to bring the conflict to a close.
