Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico Faces Treason Investigation
Robert Fico Under Criminal Investigation
According to Главком: Slovak authorities have launched a criminal investigation against Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is suspected of state treason and other serious offenses. The case has been handed over to the police for a full inquiry. The specific allegations against Fico include:
- State treason
- Abuse of power
- Crimes against humanity
- Involvement in terrorism
This legal action was initiated by opposition figures and has gained massive public backing, with over 13,000 citizens formally joining the complaint, making it the largest such petition in Slovak history. This development comes amid heightened political divisions within the country and growing scrutiny of Slovakia's foreign policy direction.
Petition Drive for a Referendum
The criminal complaint is linked to Fico's actions in energy policy, particularly his initiatives to halt emergency electricity supplies to Ukraine. Branislav Gröhling, one of the complaint's initiators, stated:
“I am convinced that Fico is suspected of committing serious crimes, and I appreciate that both the prosecutor's office and the police are acting on this matter and not keeping silent.” - Branislav Gröhling
In a separate but related political move, a petition drive has gathered 350,000 signatures to call for a referendum on holding early parliamentary elections. Organized by the Demokrati party, the campaign aims to collect several thousand more signatures as a reserve by the end of February. The referendum documents are planned to be submitted to President Peter Pellegrini.
Gröhling also emphasized that the criminal complaint's support from more than 13,000 individuals demonstrates significant societal backing for the investigation. The confluence of a major criminal probe and a push for early elections underscores a period of intense political instability in Slovakia, where public trust in the government has been eroding.
