On the Front Lines of Frost and Fire: Ukraine's Emergency Responders in Peril

Icy armor of rescuer: how SES works in frost and under shelling
Невтомні герої в умовах екстремальної небезпеки: рятувальники України в боротьбі за життя.

Braving Sub-Zero Temperatures to Save Lives

According to Главком: Despite bitter winter temperatures plunging to -30°C and ongoing Russian shelling, Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES) personnel continue their critical rescue operations. The SES recently shared a powerful image from the Poltava region showing a rescuer whose uniform had become encased in a thick layer of ice, a stark testament to the extreme conditions they endure. These first responders work relentlessly in all weather to save lives and mitigate the destruction caused by attacks, a daily reality since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

On the official SES Facebook page, Ukrainians expressed profound gratitude in the comments, praising the courage and dedication of these teams. The public's response included messages such as:

  • 'I know him personally-a true professional! Please stay safe!'
  • 'Our heroes! Thank you!'
  • 'May God protect you.'

The Constant Risks They Face

Tragically, this dangerous work often comes at the highest cost. Recently, Chief Master Sergeant of Civil Protection Mykhailo Protsenko was killed during recovery operations at a site in the Kyiv region that had been destroyed by Russian forces. The cause of death was a structural collapse. A colleague working alongside him sustained severe injuries and was hospitalized.

The work of SES rescuers in freezing and hazardous conditions exemplifies their unwavering commitment. As the service itself states,

“for rescuers, there is no such thing as 'bad weather' or temperatures that are 'too low'”

. They persist in their duties, battling fires and saving lives under the most arduous circumstances imaginable.

Amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine, the SES plays a critically important role, not only in handling emergencies but also in sustaining public morale. Their devotion and readiness to operate in extreme environments underscore the vital importance of their profession in modern society. The loss of a colleague highlights the grave dangers they confront daily, demanding not just professionalism but profound heroism.
