The Emerging Quantum Threat to Financial Encryption

According to НВ — Техно: Quantum computing advancements now suggest that RSA-2048 encryption, widely used to secure banking transactions, could be cracked far faster than previously expected. A recent study by French researchers at the Paris-based company Alice & Bob demonstrates that a quantum system equipped with 22,593 cat qubits could factorize an RSA-2048 key in only 3.14 days.

RSA-2048 encryption relies on the difficulty of factoring large prime numbers, a task that is currently secure against classical computers. However, combining ten such quantum machines could reduce the cracking time to just 1.25 hours. This rapid decryption capability poses a significant risk not only to traditional banking systems but also to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, where transaction times are tightly constrained.

The Urgent Need to Modernize Security Protocols

Currently, no laboratory possesses quantum computers with the scale of 22,593 qubits; existing experimental setups remain far smaller. Notably, IBM Quantum System One stands as the first commercial quantum computer based on electronic circuits. With ongoing improvements in quantum error correction and hardware expected over the next decade, RSA-2048 encryption standards may become obsolete.

These findings highlight the pressing necessity for financial institutions to upgrade their cybersecurity frameworks. As quantum technologies evolve, conventional encryption methods face growing vulnerabilities, emphasizing the importance of transitioning to quantum-resistant algorithms. For organizations managing sensitive financial data, proactively adapting to this paradigm shift will be crucial to maintaining robust data protection in the years ahead.

As the landscape of quantum computing rapidly evolves, advancements such as the recent unveiling of IBM's modular quantum computer, which boasts 99% fidelity, further underscore the urgency for financial institutions to adapt their security measures. This breakthrough not only enhances computational capabilities but also raises critical questions about the future of encryption standards.
