Announcement of the establishment of a nursing care hospital

According to Міністерство Здоров'я: The Minister of Health of Ukraine, Viktor Lyashko, announced during his working trip to Lviv region the creation of the first nursing care hospital in Ukraine based on the Lviv Medical College of Postgraduate Education. This pilot project will also contribute to improving the training of medical personnel.

Lyashko visited the college, where he welcomed 62 graduates in nursing and 30 graduates in pharmacy. He emphasized that nurses and orderlies make up about 60% of the healthcare workforce in the country, highlighting their importance in the medical system. Two framework documents were adopted in the fall of 2024: 'Strategic Directions for the Development of Nursing in Ukraine' and 'Strategic Directions for the Development of Pharmaceutical Education'. According to Lyashko, these documents aim to transform medical personnel training and create conditions for professional growth.

Hospital structure and integration of combat medics

The planned nursing care hospital will unite several important departments, including:

  • palliative and rehabilitation department
  • mental health department
  • educational simulation center
  • dormitory for students and trainees

Lyashko noted that similar institutions are already functioning in EU countries, Canada, the USA, and Poland, and this project is considered a pilot for further scaling in other regions of Ukraine.

In addition, the minister reported on simplified access for combat medics to civil medicine, which will be possible starting in 2025. Combat medics will be able to enroll in educational institutions through an interview without the need to pass the National Multi-Subject Test (NMT) and study under shortened programs. Plans indicate that 350 combat medics will be able to take advantage of this opportunity in 2025, emphasizing the importance of integrating military medics into civil medicine.

Establishing a nursing care hospital in Ukraine is an important step in developing the healthcare system and preparing medical personnel, as it will enhance the quality of medical services and ensure proper training for nurses and pharmacists.

Simplifying the conditions for combat medics to enter civil medicine may also positively affect the supply of medical personnel, considering their experience and skills gained during service. These initiatives may lay the foundation for further reforms in the country's medical system.
