Latvia Reports First Migrant Tunnel Discovery

According to Укрінформ — Мігранти: Latvian border guards have uncovered an underground passage dug by migrants near the Latvia–Belarus boundary, marking the first such discovery in the country. The tunnel was found late Tuesday night in a section overseen by the Silene border guard unit. Fifteen people attempting to enter illegally were detained during the operation and have been handed over for deportation. Interior Minister Janis Dombrava confirmed the finding, describing it as a fresh challenge for border security forces.

The tunnel was detected through coordinated efforts by the State Border Guard, the National Armed Forces, and the State Police. Previous illegal crossing attempts had all involved trying to scale or breach the fence. Dombrava said,

“while working to establish exactly how they crossed into our country, we discovered this concealed tunnel - so far the first one of its kind in Latvia.”

Government Response to Emerging Threats

Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has responded by calling for round-the-clock drone-based surveillance along the entire border. Although drones have already been purchased, there remains a shortage of trained operators to fly them. Kulbergs stressed:

“we want to send a clear message - there will be no gaps on our border!”

By the end of September, Latvia plans to install drone-detection systems along its border with Russia, a move intended to strengthen monitoring and prevent repeat incidents.

The discovery of the migrant-built tunnel highlights the growing pressure facing Latvian border forces amid irregular migration. It may also signal that migrants are adopting new tactics to bypass existing security measures. The government's swift push for drone coverage underlines how seriously the authorities view the situation and their broader effort to safeguard national security.

The recent discovery of a tunnel on the Latvia-Belarus border is not an isolated incident.
