The hazards of taking vitamins without medical oversight

According to НВ — Техно: An article published by NV on August 25 looks at the health risks linked to unmonitored use of vitamins and supplements. It is important to remember that excessive amounts of certain vitamins can be dangerous. For instance, too much vitamin B6, although water-soluble, can damage the nervous system, while fat-soluble vitamin A can accumulate in tissues and trigger toxic poisoning.

When vitamin supplements are genuinely justified

According to researchers, there are only a few well-supported reasons to use vitamin products:

  • A doctor-confirmed deficiency
  • Folic acid during pregnancy
  • Vitamin B12 for vegans
  • A preventive dose of 10 micrograms of vitamin D in winter

Iron is normally prescribed for the treatment of anemia. Its deficiency may result from blood loss or bowel diseases. But taking iron just because you feel fatigued, without any blood tests, is not acceptable.

Different factors can affect how well iron is absorbed. A study involving 34 women found that drinking coffee along with a 100 mg iron dose cut absorption by 54%. An ordinary breakfast reduced iron absorption by 66%, even when orange juice was consumed. In contrast, 80 mg of vitamin C increased absorption by 30%. A randomized trial with 440 patients demonstrated that iron on its own restores hemoglobin just as effectively as iron combined with vitamin C. Large amounts of calcium can also worsen iron absorption.

The NHS suggests taking ferrous sulfate on an empty stomach 30 minutes before a meal. If nausea, pain, or diarrhea occurs, it is better to take the iron supplement with food, because staying consistent is more important than achieving perfect absorption. For people on a vegan diet, vitamin B12 supplements are vital. Meanwhile, metformin for diabetes and omeprazole for heartburn may gradually deplete vitamin B12 in the blood, regardless of the time of day they are taken. Medical cyanocobalamin is recommended on an empty stomach.

Before purchasing supplements, it is wise to inspect the ingredients. Multivitamins, sports powders, and energy drinks often contain overlapping components, raising the risk of overdose. This article provides general reference information and should not be treated as a replacement for professional medical guidance.

The core message is that vitamins should be used with care and awareness. As self-treatment with supplements grows more common, it is essential to understand the potential harms and to talk with a doctor before starting any product.

Moreover, recent research highlights the significance of vitamin D in preventing asthma in children, particularly emphasizing its role before conception. Understanding the benefits of essential vitamins, especially during critical developmental periods, can help ensure better health outcomes for future generations.
