Lithuania Backs Permanent U.S. Military Presence with Financial Support

This commitment was conveyed during discussions with John Koul, the U.S. President's special envoy for Belarus, during his recent visit to Vilnius. Currently, American troops rotate through Lithuania, but the country is eager to establish a continuous U.S. military presence.

On September 29, 2026, Sinkevičius raised the topic of U.S. troops in Lithuania during talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels. The Lithuanian government emphasized the critical role of sustained U.S. and German military involvement in deterring threats along NATO’s eastern border.

“I told him that we truly want American troops permanently deployed here, and we are ready to cover the expenses if it happens,” said Mindaugas Sinkevičius.

Robust Defense Budget Supports Regional Security

For 2026, Lithuania is allocating 5.38% of its GDP directly to defense expenditures. When including related security investments, total defense spending reaches approximately 6–7% of GDP. The government intends to maintain defense spending at a minimum of 5% of GDP moving forward. The permanent stationing of U.S. forces, alongside the ongoing presence of a German brigade, forms a cornerstone of NATO's deterrence strategy on the alliance’s eastern flank.
