Innovations for the 2028 Paralympics
New additions to the 2028 Paralympic program include para-climbing, as well as three new disciplines: women's events in Paralympic table tennis, paratriathlon, and a relay for athletes with intellectual impairments in Paralympic swimming. Additionally, the female athlete quota will rise to 45%, up from 42% at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. Six sports-archery, boccia, judo, powerlifting, table tennis, and triathlon-will achieve full gender parity in participant numbers.
It is worth noting that Ukrainian para-powerlifters will boycott the 2028 Paralympics.
The 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles promise to be a landmark event for athletes with disabilities, particularly due to the new disciplines and increased quota for women. This reflects the organizers' commitment to gender equality and inclusivity in sports. At the same time, the boycott by Ukrainian para-powerlifters highlights the complex political situation that may affect the country's participation in international competitions and its sporting achievements on the global stage.
As the excitement builds for the upcoming 2028 Paralympic Games, it's essential to note that the event will coincide with other major competitions, including the 3x3 basketball Olympic qualifiers. This synergy of events not only enhances the visibility of adaptive sports but also showcases the growing inclusivity within the Olympic movement.
