According to glavcom.ua: President Volodymyr Zelensky signed law No. 13229, which allows people aged 60 and older to serve in the military under contract. According to this law, during martial law, citizens aged 60 and older may be accepted for contract service with the written consent of the commander and the appointment of the appropriate medical commission.

Contract soldiers in this category will be able to hold various positions in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and the duration of the contract will be one year with the possibility of extension. Officers will be able to sign the contract after agreeing on the candidate with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

A probationary period of two months is provided for this category of citizens in the contract. If the serviceman does not successfully pass the tests, the contract will be terminated.

Recall that the draft law on amendments to the law 'On Military Duty and Military Service' was supported by the Verkhovna Rada on July 16. This law allows citizens aged 60 and older to voluntarily register for military service.

Signed laws on martial law and mobilization

In addition to the law on military service, President Volodymyr Zelensky also signed laws extending the duration of martial law and mobilization until November 5, 2025.

The law on military service under contract after 60 years opens up opportunities for citizens of Ukraine who have crossed the 60-year mark to choose a military career. Now pensioners can also join the Armed Forces and perform important service duties under contract during martial law.
