Luhansk Region Showcases 10 Photos in 'Wiki Loves Monuments' Contest Running Until October 31
'Wiki Loves Monuments' Highlights Luhansk's Heritage
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: During the first half of October, 10 images capturing the cultural heritage of Luhansk were submitted to the 'Wiki Loves Monuments' competition. Out of 1,618 registered heritage sites across Luhansk Oblast, 566 have photographic documentation, representing 34% coverage. The contest will continue accepting photos and videos until October 31, 2026, with submissions allowed for media created up to August 31, 2026. An exception applies to interior shots of monuments and materials from temporarily occupied territories, which have no creation date restrictions.
Since the contest began, 101 participants have contributed photos of Luhansk's heritage. The Rovenky district is the least documented, with images covering only 8% of its monuments, while Siverskodonetsk district has the highest representation at 64%. The competition also features special categories dedicated to Bulgarian, Jewish, German, Polish, and Czech cultural heritage, along with wooden architecture. These lists include sites that have yet to receive official state protection.

"As the war continues, opportunities to document Luhansk’s history and culture become increasingly scarce. We hope this contest will serve as a visual archive for the region. To achieve this, everyone who lives in, travels through, or loves Luhansk must contribute their photographs."

The 'Wiki Loves Monuments' competition plays a crucial role in preserving Luhansk’s cultural heritage by enabling documentation of sites at risk of being forgotten due to war and other challenges. The event encourages local community involvement in safeguarding regional history and raises awareness about its valuable monuments. Given the current difficulties, this contest is a vital tool for building a lasting visual record of Luhansk and promoting its heritage to a global audience.
As Luhansk showcases its heritage through the 'Wiki Loves Monuments' contest, similar initiatives across Ukraine highlight the rich cultural history of the nation. For instance, an interactive exhibit in Lviv commemorates 35 years of Ukraine’s independence, emphasizing the importance of preserving and celebrating local heritage. Such events not only document historical sites but also foster a sense of community and national pride.
