Statements from Political Leaders on the War in Ukraine

According to Главком: During an interview with Al Arabiya on June 12, Belarusian self-declared President Alexander Lukashenko claimed that Russia’s war against Ukraine might conclude before the end of 2026. He also suggested that a potential ceasefire could extend beyond Ukraine to include the situation in the Middle East. However, Lukashenko offered no specifics on the conditions for ending the war or the mechanisms needed to achieve peace.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, speaking to the press after his visit to Kazakhstan, argued that it is impossible to set a precise timeline for the cessation of hostilities. He asserted that the current battlefield situation supposedly gives Russia full justification to claim the conflict is rapidly approaching its finale.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov also weighed in on the war’s potential end, stating it could conclude within a day if Ukrainian forces withdraw from territories Russia already considers its own. Peskov did not clarify that these are temporarily occupied Ukrainian lands.

Debating Scenarios for Ending the Conflict

International political actors continue to discuss possible scenarios for resolving the conflict, but the positions of the opposing sides remain deeply divided. The remarks from Lukashenko, Putin, and Peskov indicate efforts by Russia and its allies to legitimize their actions, yet the absence of clear plans and peace conditions underscores how entrenched the war remains.

The stance of the international community continues to be a critical factor that could shape future developments in Ukraine and the broader region.

As discussions about the potential end of the conflict continue, it is crucial to consider the evolving situation on the ground. Recent analyses indicate that Ukraine is projected to gain net territory by 2026, which could significantly impact the dynamics of negotiations and the overall resolution of the war. Understanding these developments may shed light on the broader implications for regional stability.
