Archaeological Items Prevented from Leaving Ukraine
Meanwhile, customs officers in Kyiv intercepted the attempted export of 39 archaeological artifacts destined for the United States, France, and Italy. The senders were individuals from the Kharkiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Vinnytsia regions. During the inspection of an international postal shipment, Kyiv customs also uncovered a unique military artifact: a Prussian officer’s helmet from 1915. This helmet, made from a copper-based alloy and gilded, was being shipped from the Rivne region to the United States.
The announcement of these auctions by Lviv Customs indicates a stepped-up process for selling confiscated goods, which could serve as an additional revenue stream for the state. At the same time, the actions of Kyiv customs officials in stopping the export of archaeological items highlight the critical need to preserve Ukraine’s cultural heritage and regulate the outflow of valuable artifacts. These events underscore the customs authorities’ efforts to uphold legality and enforce legal standards in Ukraine.
