NOAA’s Revised Forecast for Magnetic Storms on June 23–24
Updated Outlook: Geomagnetic Activity on June 23–24, 2023
According to Главком: According to the latest data from NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), minor geomagnetic activity is expected on June 23–24, 2023. Geomagnetic activity is measured on a scale from 0 to 9 using the planetary K-index. On June 23, the K-index is forecast at 2, corresponding to a green activity level, while on June 24, it is expected to rise slightly to 3.7, still within the green range.
How Magnetic Storms Affect Human Health
Magnetic storms are triggered by solar flares and eruptions that release charged particles-primarily protons and electrons-into Earth’s atmosphere. A K-index of 5 or higher indicates a strong magnetic storm, while fluctuations between 1 and 4 are considered minor. Storms with a K-index above 5 are classified as red-level events, which can produce auroras if the index reaches 7 or 8.
Forecasts for magnetic storms are updated every three hours as solar activity researchers refine their data. It is important to note that geomagnetic disturbances can influence atmospheric pressure, potentially affecting how people feel. To mitigate any discomfort, experts recommend maintaining a consistent daily routine and diet:
- get adequate sleep;
- eat nutritious foods;
- avoid spicy, salty, or fatty meals;
- limit alcohol and coffee intake.
To support the body during magnetic storms, it is beneficial to drink herbal teas and plenty of water, take walks outdoors while avoiding direct sunlight, and engage in light physical activity to boost energy. Individuals with chronic health conditions should rest more and keep necessary medications close at hand. A morning contrast shower and an evening relaxing bath may also help. Avoiding conflicts and stressful situations can further improve well-being during these periods.
Given the forecast of only minor geomagnetic activity, most people are unlikely to notice significant changes in how they feel. However, following these lifestyle tips can help reduce any potential negative effects. Monitoring magnetic storms remains important, as they can impact electronics, power grids, and human health-especially for those with certain medical conditions.
