France Now Supplies Two-Thirds of Ukraine's Intelligence, Macron States, Filling a Void Left by the U.S.
A Shift in Ukraine's Intelligence Support
According to Главком: French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a significant shift in the intelligence support provided to Ukraine, revealing that Paris now furnishes approximately two-thirds of all intelligence data. This role was previously filled by the United States. This change underscores a gradual move by European nations to assume greater responsibility for Ukraine's military support, a development closely watched by Western allies.
A coalition of roughly 35 nations continues to provide Ukraine with financial, military, and intelligence assistance. In December 2022, Ukrainian intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov emphasized Ukraine's critical dependence on the United States for intelligence, highlighting the vital role such information plays in the ongoing conflict.
European Nations Step Up
French Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu had previously acknowledged that a halt in U.S. intelligence sharing in 2025 could impact the situation in Ukraine. In March 2025, the U.S. suspended weapons deliveries and the sharing of intelligence with Ukraine, a move confirmed by CIA Director John Ratcliffe. The decision by U.S. President Donald Trump was explained as an effort to gauge Kyiv's readiness for peace negotiations.
In response, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have intensified their intelligence programs in support of Ukraine. This marks a notable evolution in military aid approaches, with European countries taking a more active role in providing Ukraine with crucial battlefield information.
The shift in Ukraine's intelligence provisioning, particularly the increased role of France and other European nations, reflects an evolution in international support for Ukraine. Europe's heightened responsibility for military aid signals a desire among EU countries to become more active players in ensuring regional stability. This development could also influence future strategies for interaction between Ukraine and its Western allies, especially in the context of potential peace talks.
