Marco Rubio Questions Putin’s Attendance at G20 Summit; Peace in Ukraine Unlikely Before 2027
Uncertainty Surrounding Vladimir Putin’s Potential Appearance at the G20 Summit
According to ХВИЛЯ: U.S. Senator Marco Rubio has expressed skepticism about Russian President Vladimir Putin attending the upcoming G20 summit in Miami this December. Rubio noted that Putin’s participation has not been officially confirmed. He also forecasted that a peace agreement over the conflict in Ukraine is not expected anytime soon, with any potential acceptance from Putin unlikely before spring 2027.
Ukraine’s Situation Absent from Recent G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting
During the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Atlanta on October 30-31, 2023, Ukraine was notably omitted from discussions. The session concluded without a joint communiqué, as the U.S. presidency’s statement made no mention of Russia, Ukraine, or the ongoing war. Some delegations even declined to take the traditional group photo due to the presence of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, resulting in the photo session being canceled.
Rubio further emphasized that Ukraine’s short-term NATO membership remains unrealistic and unacceptable to Putin. He warned that even if Russia were to seize full control of the Donbas region, it would not end Kremlin’s territorial ambitions. According to Rubio’s estimates, the Russian military suffers approximately 20,000 fatalities monthly.
He also stressed the critical need for communication channels between the U.S. and Russia to prevent future escalation. Rubio highlighted the challenge of achieving conflict resolution if dialogue cannot be maintained with both parties involved.
Regarding the possibility of inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Miami summit, Rubio indicated that the decision rests with former President Donald Trump. Additionally, the United States is considering ceasefire proposals from Turkey and India concerning the Black Sea region. Rubio summarized the conflict as extremely deadly and destructive.

Rubio’s remarks reflect U.S. concerns about the risk of continued escalation, which could have serious security implications for the region. Furthermore, uncertainty over the attendance of key leaders at global forums like the G20 complicates diplomatic efforts aimed at stabilizing Ukraine and its neighboring areas.
