Bruno Génésio Takes the Helm at Marseille

The position opened up after Habib Beye was dismissed; Beye had taken over midway through the previous season, succeeding Roberto De Zerbi. Génésio most recently managed Lille, where he led the team to notable achievements.

In his first season with Lille, the club finished fifth in Ligue 1, followed by a rise to third place in his second season. The club also reached the Round of 16 in both the Champions League and the Europa League. A native of Lyon, Génésio spent the majority of his playing career at Lyon, also featuring for Nice and Martigues.

His coaching journey began in 1999 with Villefranche, where he spent two seasons. He later managed Racing Besançon before returning to Lyon as a scout, eventually serving as an assistant coach for the first team and head coach of the reserve side.

In 2015, Génésio became Lyon's head coach, spending four seasons there and securing a runner-up finish in Ligue 1 during his debut campaign. He also coached Beijing Guoan in China and, from 2021 to 2023, managed Rennes, where he ended both seasons in fourth place.

Marseille's Financial Struggles

Meanwhile, Marseille is grappling with severe financial issues, having accumulated roughly €157 million in debt over the past three years. In 2022, the club agreed with UEFA to keep losses under €60 million, but by the 2024/25 season, that limit was exceeded twofold. These financial troubles put the club's European competition spot at risk. Marseille is set to begin the 2026/27 season in the Europa League group stage.

In other news, Monaco has activated a buy option for striker Ansu Fati, who spent last season on loan at the club. Additionally, FIFA has granted Russia's youth national team permission to compete in the World Cup for 15-year-olds, to be held in Azerbaijan this autumn.
